DRAWING & PAINTING I
Sachem High School East – Ms. Corbisiero
The objective of this course is to take the student beyond the basics of pencil rendering through an in-depth exploration of fine art media. Collecting, selecting and developing references to be used as subject matter is a skill which will enable the student to produce his/her own unique pieces of art. Various styles of art, artists and the history of art are discussed and incorporated into our learning. All projects stress and reinforce the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design. It is a credit-bearing course that meets daily from September through June and includes a final exam project at the end of the course.
Requirements and Materials
- Students are asked to bring in the materials on attached sheet (due Friday 9/12). *Note: most of the students materials remain students’ property and can be used for future art classes whether in high school, private classes or college.
- This is a workshop class. Attendance, promptness to class, positive/on-task behavior and participation are required. Poor attendance, lateness, cutting, poor behavior, etc. will negatively impact a student’s grade.
- Good time management and adherence to due dates are crucial.
- Courtesy and respect for others is expected. Proper use of and respect for all supplies, materials, and artwork is expected.
Homework
Assignments may require bringing in reference materials, digital photos, sketchbook assignments, and/or keeping a daily sketchbook log of ideas for projects. Homework will be graded, it is important to put the same effort into homework as a class assignment by due date.
Absences
- The art department strictly adheres to Sachem’s attendance policy.
- If a student cannot attend class, it will be his/her responsibility to make up missed assignments. Assignment information can be obtained by contacting a classmate or by emailing me at LCorbisiero@Sachem.edu.
- If a student falls behind due to absences, he/she will be expected to make up time after school.
- If a student is legally absent the day an assignment is due, he/she must turn the assignment in the day he/she returns to school, unless otherwise discussed.
- Work that is late due to one or more illegal absences will receive no credit.
Discipline
“DP 1” is an enjoyable and educational course. If a behavioral problem arises, the procedure is:
Verbal warning
Parental contact / Possible detention
Referral to Assistant Principal
Grading
Grades are based on a project average for the marking period (80%) and participation and preparedness (20%). A final exam project is given at the end of the year, and the final grade for the course is the average of all four marking periods and the final, each weighted at 20%.
Extra help
Extra help is available regularly and as needed after school, during 9th period. Please see me to discuss staying
after to be sure I am available.
Parent-Teacher Contact
Please call or email if you have any comments or concerns, and I will do the same. My goal is to keep your son/daughter moving forward in a positive direction throughout the year, improving at his/her own level of ability.

HOMEWORK - 1 ST QUARTER
DP1 Sketchbook Assignments – Quarter 1
You must complete all of the assignments below, by the dates listed.
Sketchbook homework is (usually) due every other Friday:
9/12… 10/10… 10/24… 11/7
These completed compositions will count as one project grade.
· Complete on time!
· Follow directions! Check the required medium for each one!
· Drawings should fill the page(s) and run off the edge of the paper. Don’t float a drawing in the middle of an otherwise empty page.
· Drawings should be from life (not photos) and must be original ideas… DO NOT COPY FROM THE INTERNET! If you plagiarize your work by copying someone else’s photo and/or artwork, you will receive a zero.
· Use controlled shading with a full range of values and/or a variety of interesting lines.
· Put time and effort into it… plan to spend a minimum of 1 hour per assignment.
· Finished composition should look accurate, neat, and complete.
Due 9/12: Find two real objects with the basic shapes from still life drawing. Example two cones would create a lava lamp. Draw these objects, using a lamp or other light to make dramatic shadows. Use drawing pencils and show at least 5 values AND complete two Bargue eyes.
Due 10/10: Make a detailed drawing of your hand holding something related to the fall season OR related to school. Make the drawing large enough that it touches all the edges of the page. Use drawing pencils and show at least 5 values. You may also add a pop of color (using colored pencil) to emphasize something (optional) AND complete two Bargue eyes.
Due 10/24: Pop some popcorn or buy a small bag. Take a few kernels and look at the shapes and shades created. With pencil and tortillion if needed, study a few of the popped kernels and fill the page with them (enlarged!). This drawing should show a good sense of drawing skill and soft gray values, as well as good contrast where needed and a well-balanced composition AND complete two Bargue eyes.
Due 11/7: A crumpled piece of looseleaf paper... please use graphite pencils and a blending tortillion to gently smooth light grays and soft edges (careful not to lose your contrast and hard edges!), and colored pencils to create the blue and pink lines AND complete two Bargue eyes.
TRAVELLING ART BOOK – each student will have a turn to create in the travelling art book. This is due on FRIDAY, no exceptions. If you completed a page this quarter it will be added to your homework grade.
