1. Value Scale and Texture:
Create the appearance of texture on a hand (fur, scales, burlap, cactus, brick) and create a 5 value scale in shading, hatching, cross-hatching and choice by using pencil pressure and technique.

2. Direct Observation Contour Line Drawing of Hands:
-Using size/object relationships draw your hand. Use a pencil or ruler measure fingers in relation to palm (example, if pointer finger is the same size as top of palm translate that measurement with a mark on paper) Continue size/object relationships to draw hands in various poses.
-Minimum 5 hands
-Interesting composition (fill page)
-If not using sign language letters, then include one or more hands running off page
-Outline contour of hand in sharpie
-Erase pencil marks
-color hands lightly in colored pencil
-color complete background dark
-background must include blended colors for optical blending and color mixing
-neatness

Eighth Grade Studio Art
Sachem Central School District
The Eighth Grade Studio Art course continues to develop understanding of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in alignment with standards of art set by New York State and recommendations of the National Art Education Association. Visual expressions will become more individualistic and imaginative as we infuse a variety of artistic approaches. Students will explore historical and cultural connections through art and discover the relevance of art in their daily lives.
Requirements and Materials
- Students are asked to bring in the following:
- 12 – (#2) pencils with erasers (prefer “Dixon Ticonderoga” brand)
- Two white erasers (such as “Staedler” plastic erasers)
- Other materials as requested by individual teacher
- This is a workshop class. Attendance, promptness to class, positive/on-task behavior and participation are required. Poor attendance, lateness, poor behavior, etc. will negatively impact a student’s grade.
- Good time management and adherence to due dates are crucial.
- Proper use of and respect for all supplies, materials, and artwork is mandatory.
- Courtesy and respect for others is expected.
Absences
- The art department strictly adheres to Sachem’s attendance policy.
- If a student cannot attend class, it will be his/her responsibility to make up missed assignments. Assignment information can be obtained by contacting a classmate or by emailing class teacher.
Safety – Safety in the art room is extremely important. Students are expected to consider the safety of themselves and others while using art materials and tools. All incidents involving misuse of materials and tools will be reported to a school official and a parent or guardian.
Discipline - If a behavioral problem arises, the procedure is:
- Verbal warning
- Parental contact / Possible detention
- Referral to Assistant Principal

Extra help is available regularly after school. Please contact teacher for specific days.
GradingThe student’s final average for each marking period will be calculated based upon the following percentages:
- Projects 80%
- Class Participation and Preparedness 20%
Final Course AverageThe final course average is based upon the following percentages:
- Four Quarterly Grades 80%
- Midterm Exam 5%
- Final Exam 15%
